October is Window Safety Month, a time when the window coverings industry particularly highlights the importance of hazard-free window treatments. Cords on blinds and shades can cause strangulation for children and pets. The dangers posed by corded window treatments may not seem obvious or be the first thing on the minds of parents when childproofing, but according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, corded window coverings are one of the top five hidden hazards in American homes. Infants and children can become entangled in these cords, which can result in potentially fatal accidents.

Blinds, shades and draperies manufactured before 2001 should be replaced with products that meet the current safety requirements.
If one cannot replace window coverings that pre-date 2001, retrofit cord kits are available from windowcoverings.org
Move cribs, beds, and toys away from windows with corded coverings.
Cords for horizontal blinds should be locked in place whenever the blinds are lowered.
